is a leading candidate for a theory of quantum gravity, and also provides a framework for the unification of the forces of nature. It has both "direct" applications, by which one can investigate questions about the evolution of the early Universe, the nature of the dark energy and its connection to symmetry breaking, and the spectrum of subatomic particles and forces; as well as "indirect" applications, where through the concept of holography and the AdS/CFT correspondence one can study descriptions of strongly coupled phenomena, including nuclear and condensed matter systems. However, not everything is yet understood about the nature of the theory. I am interested in studying the characteristics of string theory, its predictions for the quantum nature of space and time, and both direct applications (particle physics, supersymmetry breaking, the cosmological constant, dynamics in the early Universe) and indirect applications (dual descriptions of heavy ion and strongly correlated systems).</p> </div> </div> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--right"> <div class="field field--name-field-image-browser field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img alt="Oliver DeWolfe photo." src="/sites/default/files/website/oliver_dewolfe%5B1%5D.jpg" width="207" height="304" loading="lazy" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-role field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">CTQM Role</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/803" hreflang="en">CTQM Fellow</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-research-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Research Category</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/789" hreflang="en">high energy physics</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-email field--type-email field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Email</div> <div class="field--item">oliver.dewolfe@colorado.edu</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-phone field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Phone</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item">303-492-3272 (office)</div> <div class="field--item">303-492-5119 (fax)</div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-website field--type-link field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Website</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="http://spot.colorado.edu/~dewolfe/">http://spot.colorado.edu/~dewolfe/</a></div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 15 Mar 2023 15:44:40 +0000 kdcadmin 3845 at http://ctqm.colorado.edu High Energy Physics http://ctqm.colorado.edu/research-area-description/high-energy-physics <span>High Energy Physics</span> <span><span>kdcadmin</span></span> <span>Thu, 03/09/2023 - 2:43 pm</span> <div class="field field--name-field-paragraphs field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field--item"><p>High energy physics studies the nature of matter and the forces of Nature on the smallest scales. In recent years, high energy physicists have also begun to study the quantum nature of gravity. There are several areas of active research in high energy physics that overlap with other fields of physics in the broad study of quantum matter, from connections to nuclear physics and condensed matter physics in the study of the strong nuclear force to applications of quantum information science in the study of quantum black holes. The development of string theory as a theory of quantum gravity has led to the gauge/gravity (or AdS/CFT) correspondence, directly linking strongly correlated quantum matter to black hole physics in higher dimensions.
