Abstract, Event Details: 

In the their article "Deformation Theory and Quantization" from 1977,
Bayen, Flato, Fronsdal, Lichnerowicz and Sternheimer introduced a mathematically
rigorous approach to canonical quantization a la Dirac where the obstruction results 
found by physicists Gronewold and van Hove can be circumvented. In the first part of the 
talk the mathematical problems arising around canoncial quantization and 
the Gronewold--van Hove "no go"-theorems are explained. In the second part
an overview of deformation quantization and its achievements will be given. In the 
third and final part, we will outline some recent work joint with Rudolph and Schmidt 
on the construction of a deformation quantization for certain lattice gauge models.
