Abstract, Event Details:

Over the past few years, there has been significant interest in a new class of symmetries called “higher-form symmetries.”  This interest and activity has been centered within the high-energy quantum field theory community, but higher-form symmetries are also of relevance to many-body quantum systems more generally.  In this talk I will give a basic introduction to higher-form symmetries, mostly in the context of simple, familiar lattice models, and attempt to explain some of the reasons these symmetries have been of recent interest.  Time permitting, I will very briefly discuss the relevance of such symmetries to fracton phases of matter.
