In my talk, I will combine various ideas from thermodynamics, quantum information and "holography" to understand new aspects of the dynamics of black holes. Recently, examining thermodynamics from the perspective of quantum information has revealed a broader class of constraints on thermodynamic evolution beyond the usual second law. In black hole thermodynamics, the usual second law is manifest as the area increase theorem. Hence we ask if the new second laws imply new restrictions for gravitational dynamics, such as for out-of-equilibrium black holes? Applying these ideas within the AdS/CFT correspondence, we answer this question in the affirmative. In particular, within this framework, we show that there are transitions which are allowed by the traditional second law, but forbidden by the new thermodynamic constraints.
